Reimagining the Sacred. Discovering it Within.

Dorothy Allison is right, of course: you are the only one who can tell your particular story.

This is why you write, yes?

Me too.

Yes, you write. You journal. You type. You blog. You are a poet, a memoirist, a novelist, a doodler, a Bullet Journal® aficionado. Your hard-drive has a folder named “Writing” that holds more content than you remember creating. You’ve been doing this for years. You just started (again). You use lined paper. You use a leather-bound, blank-page journal. You use MSWord – 1” margins, full-justified, double-spaced. You write in the margins. You always use the same font. You never use the same font. You have a favorite pen. You have a ritual. You wish you had a ritual. You write every day – same time, same chair, same steaming mug of coffee. You write when you feel like it – different times, different days, wherever and whenever the mood strikes. You love words. You love your Thesaurus. You’ve read Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird at least twice, Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones is definitely on your shelf, and you keep meaning to get to On Writing by Stephen King. You can’t imagine not writing. You can’t understand why you don’t do it more, better, consistently, always.

Maybe you can say it: I am a writer.
Maybe you just wish it: I want to be a writer.
For sure, this: I write.

Me too. (All of the above.)

Your motivation for writing, your particular “why” is distinct and unique to you, but tell me if I’m close on these two points:

1) You write, first and foremost, for yourself.

Always for you. Your brilliant thoughts (and those that are less-so, but no less needing to be expressed). Your heart. Your emotions. Your fears. Your frustrations. Your secrets. What you are mulling, chewing, aching-over, wondering, deciding, desiring. Your fabulous ideas. Your deepest beliefs. Those endless doubts. The pages and pages you will burn before you’ll reveal. Your change-the-world-if-only-others-were-listening stuff.

This IS SacredWriting – because you are imbuing it with meaning, because it connects you to something bigger/larger/deeper, because it has a ritual and rhythm that soothes and strengthens.

2) You really want to write for others.

You trust-know-believe-hope you have something to say, something to offer, something to give, something you know in a particular and powerful way, so much that you want to convey. The form (or platform) might evade. The manuscript, the proposal, the self-confidence, the agent are yet to evolve. But still…this has to happen, right? You WANT your words, your thoughts, your heart conveyed. You want to be heard. You want to be seen. Really. Truly. For the brilliant light you are. And even though you wonder sometimes, you mostly believe that no one else can say what you can, see what you can, feel what you can, write what you can. Right.

This IS SacredWriting – because you see, recognize, and long to honor the meaning within your own words, thoughts, ideas, and heart, because you are expressing something that is bigger/larger/deeper, because you know that it will soothe and strengthen others.

And yet… You struggle.

Me too.

What I need, what we all need, is support, a safe space, the presence of consistent-and-kind encouragement and accountability, a reader who hears, sees, and cares – deeply.

I’ve been writing with Ronna for years now, and in that time I have been blessed to receive her generous, insightful, provocative feedback for how I can take my writing deeper into the truth that only I can write. That is her gift – to find the doorway that will take you deeper into the words that only your soul can speak. Her knowledge of the craft of writing is powerful; the only thing more so is her desire for you to unearth and bring forth yours.

Julie Daley

Ronna never fails to reflect back to me the deeper truth of my own words – with grace, with love and with deft insight that meets me where I am in this moment, and then opens a door to what could be. Thanks to the gift of writing with her, I not only know my own story better, but I know my own soul better.

Amy Palko

When I work with Ronna on my writing, she takes my hand and guides my words through a flame. We sit, side-by-side and watch as that flame licks away the old beliefs, the shoulds, the supposed to’s and the false narratives. The words that come through the other side are clean. Pure. Truer than true…and wholly mine. And then the real writing begins. It is truly a sacred experience.

What SacredWriting is:

  • Knowing, with surety and certainty, that your writing (even the most private and personal stuff) can be heard, held, and honored.
  • Just you and me. One-on-one. No group. Intimate. Private. Safe.
  • A place in which you can allow your words (even your heart) to be read – trusting that you are safe and profoundly respected.
  • Feedback – not on your technique or syntax or grammar (necessarily), but on what is actually said – and not said, what is on the lines and between them; a witnessing of your truth.
  • Permission to articulate your inner dialogue without the ever-spinning hamster wheel in your own brain.
  • Telling your stories – especially the ones that have you questioning, doubting, hurting, afraid – and feeling completely understood.
  • And then (if all this weren’t enough) hearing from your reader (me) in a way that will invite you to explore even more, write even more, go even deeper – in your writing, yes; in your very life.

This is what I do. This is what I offer. This is what I invite.

How SacredWriting works:

You write.
I read.
I respond.

You write.
I read.
I respond.

You get the idea…

We can work with a particular project, if you’d like – a blog post, a one-day chapter in your book – and/or your more organic, less-formal work – a journal entry, an unsent letter, your pen on the page. Any single piece of prose. Up to three rounds of back and forth. Deeper exploration each time. Greater insight. Gentle accountability. And more than all else…

…you and your writing: heard, held, and honored.

This IS the sacred. And this IS SacredWriting.

Your writing deserves this. Your story deserves this. You deserve this.

Let’s do this…

What SacredWriting offers:

So much, but at least these three things –

  • A piece of writing of up to 2000 words that you can look at, read, and return to that has taken you more deeply into your own story and your own writing. It serves as tangible, visceral example of your voice and your heart on the page.
  • A process of writing that adds awareness, breadth, and depth to your ongoing writing practice, to the writing itself (which matters profoundly), and to the Sacred in your life.
  • Affirmation and awareness that your writing matters – as do you!

More details:

  • Round 1: We begin with a 30-minute call. Beautiful, rich conversation and specific questions that will help me best-discern our starting point. A particular project or piece that you want to work with? A personally-created prompt that will invite you more deeply into a story, an event, a struggle, a fear, a memory, a dream, a desire, a grief? Let’s decide together.
  • You’ll write – working with the content/theme as you wish. Remember: this is not about syntax, grammar, or even spellcheck. It’s about letting yourself speak, getting your inner world out into external form. It’s about being seen and heard. It’s about having permission and safety to tell/write whatever comes – knowing it will be read and honored in the most sacred of ways – because it IS SacredWriting.
  • You’ll send me what you have (somewhere between 800 and 2000 words). I’ll receive it like the precious gift it is.
  • I’ll read and respond. What I see. What I don’t see. What I feel. What I sense. What I wonder. Where I’m curious. What invites more. In the margins. Between the lines. From my heart to yours.
  • Rounds 2 and 3: You’ll write again – working off my questions, additional prompts, insights, and musings. More. Deeper. Mmmmm.
  • You’ll send me your enhanced, ever-deepening piece – or a brand new one, compelled by the journey of Round #1 (again, 800-2000 words).
  • I’ll read and respond up to two more times.* The movement I see. The path forward. The next steps. And a blessing, my blessing, my heart on your behalf.
  • Throughout: Ongoing, open-ended email dialogue with me. What’s showing up? Where do you feel stuck? How can I help?
  • Editing (Optional) : If you are desirous and ready for your words to be heard and seen in broader realms, let’s turn our attention and gaze toward the more technical aspects of your writing. Yes, the grammar, the syntax, the format, the flow. We’ll dive back in, look at things anew, ask more and different questions, and create a finished and “print-ready” piece. Not required, but happily offered (see pricing below).
  • Coaching Calls (Optional): I would be honored to compliment your written work with constructive-and-kind conversation, additional and intentional ways in which to experience not only your SacredWriting, but the Sacred in your everyday life (see pricing below).
* If you’d like more than three rounds of back-and-forth in this process together, Just email me for details on how we might create a couture package and price that will work uniquely on your behalf. Further, if you have a larger project – like a manuscript (or part of one) and want this process to be something far more expansive, I’d love to discuss that with you, as well.

A Postscript:

A dear friend recently asked me: “What makes something sacred, Ronna?” I paused and then, without much thought, said this:

Sacred is something we imbue with meaning above and beyond its practical or assumed value or worth.

Sacred is anything/anyone that connects us with something larger than ourselves.

Sacred is ritual and rhythm that grounds us, that makes a particular experience distinctive and set apart.

All three of these things already apply to your writing, yes? That’s why I know it IS SacredWriting. And that’s why I would love to read it, offer you my seeing, my hearing, my heart, and strengthen yours. May it be so.
